David was not only the King of Israel but he was also a prophet, therefore much of his writings were prophetic.

Peter wrote of David:

I foresaw the Lord always before my face…therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn by an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his thrown… (Acts 2:25, 30).

Not all the psalms are written by David. It was the hymn book of Israel but every word is Divinely inspired and is profitable in every way. It is a source of encouragement in times of trouble and lifts our hearts in praise and thanksgiving for God’s mercy, provision, and hope.

Many psalms are prophetic of Christ’s first advent, His Diety, His death, resurrection, high priestly ministry, second advent and future rule as King of kings. They also contain much about Israel’s future.

The Book of psalms was the hymn book of the Jews long before the Church was revealed and needs to be read through a Jew’s eyes. Once the Church is Raptured the psalms will take on a new meaning as the Tribulation judgments are poured out and the kingdom is established.

To understand the future prophetic significance of the psalms we should read them standing in a Jew’s shoes as they will read them in a future day when the Tribulation comes upon them and when the Lord is reigning in His Kingdom: The Psalms will take on a whole new meaning if we do.
